What Medicare Is

Medicare is a federal health insurance program mainly for people age 65 and older. Some younger individuals may also qualify due to disability or certain health conditions.

Medicare helps cover many healthcare costs, but it does not cover everything. That is why understanding the basics is such an important first step.

Important to know: Original Medicare does not cover most dental, vision, hearing, or long-term care. Knowing these gaps helps you plan for any additional coverage you may need.

Primary Eligibility Age

Who typically qualifies?

  • Most people become eligible at age 65.

  • Those under 65 may qualify after 24 months of SSDI, or with certain conditions such as End-Stage Renal Disease or ALS.

The Building Blocks

Understanding the Parts of Medicare

A

Part A

Hospital Coverage

Inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services.

B

Part B

Medical Coverage

Doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medically necessary services.

C

Part C

Medicare Advantage

A private plan alternative that bundles Parts A and B, often with additional benefits included.

D

Part D

Prescription Drugs

Helps cover the cost of prescription medications through standalone or bundled drug plans.

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and provide Medicare-covered benefits through a different plan structure, often including extra benefits. The right fit depends on your doctors, prescriptions, budget, travel needs, and personal preferences.

Your Options

Two Main Ways to Receive Medicare Benefits

Original Medicare generally includes Part A and Part B. Some people also choose additional coverage, such as prescription drug coverage or a Medicare Supplement plan, to help fill in the gaps.

Original Medicare

What to Know

Enrollment Timing Matters

When you enroll can make a big difference. Your timing may depend on your age, work status, whether you have employer coverage, and when you plan to retire. Missing certain deadlines can sometimes lead to penalties or delays in coverage, so it helps to understand your timeline early.

3 months before turning 65

Your Initial Enrollment Period begins. This is often the ideal time to start.

The month you turn 65

Your birthday month is included in your Initial Enrollment Period window.

3 months after turning 65

Your Initial Enrollment Period ends. Enrolling late may result in penalties.

Special Enrollment Periods

If you have employer coverage, you may qualify to enroll later without penalty.

What to Watch For

Common Medicare Mistakes to Avoid

1

Waiting too long to enroll, which can result in late enrollment penalties

2

Assuming Medicare covers everything, including dental, vision, and long-term care

3

Choosing coverage without checking whether your doctors and prescriptions are included

4

Confusing Medicare Advantage with Medicare Supplement — they are quite different

5

Making rushed decisions without first understanding the basics

"The best time to learn about Medicare is before you need to make a decision."
